Sufi qawwalis presented at the Mehfil-e-Qawwali - a musical nite organised recently by Gujarati Samaj - enthralled everyone. What was unique about this do was that all the qawwalis were sung by the youngsters of the samaj. When we caught up with one of the organisers, Kavita Shah, she said, "I'm impressed with these youngsters, who have put in a lot of hard work and efforts for this show.
They were trained by some professional singers for just five days and these young singers have put up an amazing show." The whiff of divine music wafted through the corridors of Gujarat Bhavan, as the show started with old numbers and slowly proceeded towards contemporary songs. Chadta suraj dheere dheere and Dama dum mast kalandar were enjoyed by one and all. As the evening progressed, the intense tempo and mellifluous renditions of Rahat Fateh Ali's popular Sufi numbers by the youngsters left the audience mesmerised. All the participants were later felicitated by the elders of the samaj for their superb performances.
